Project Overview: This project involved the redevelopment of a very popular public beach located in the City of Hopkins, MN and owned by the City of Minnetonka. The central feature of the park master plan maintained the beach area with its deep diving platform that has drawn people from around the metropolitan area for years. Redevelopment included expansion of the beach, inclusion of a wet/dry children’s playground and terraced playgrounds, lawn areas, placement of entry control and safety features, and enlargement of visitor parking. Increasing recreational opportunities for families with young children, teens, and the elderly was a major design concern. Special attention was focused on the replacement of the support buildings to make sure the site was more user friendly by adding new facilities such as changing rooms, enlarged concessions with plaza spaces overlooking the beach area, playgrounds, and universal access to beach side facilities. The improvements were completed in 1999.
