Project Overview: Loring Park has been a widely recognized historic community park since its acquisition in 1883 by the newly formed Minneapolis Park Board, whose president was Charles M. Loring. The original park design was created by H.W.S. Cleveland and Frederick Law Olmsted. Although some of the design ideas of Cleveland’s original design remained, a number of redevelopments over the years had detracted from its original design, with varying results. The focus of this project was to reconsider every aspect of the park to determine whether or not various amenities were appropriate within the context of the parks history and current needs. The master plan reintroduced many of the original design themes, while still accommodating the current needs and uses of a broadly diverse population. The master plan features a restored lake, relocated historic Superintendents’ Office Building, ornamental gardens, separate walking and bicycling paths, performance area, competition horseshoe courts, and a restored community arts building. The master plan was adopted in 1996. The construction process was completed in stages as funds became available, and a majority of the master plan has been implemented.
